dead Colma

Colma is a small city in San Mateo County , California, at the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula in the Bay Area of \u200b\u200bSan Francisco .
The population was 1,191 at the 2000 census. The city was founded as a necropolis in 1924. Much of Colma's land is dedicated to the use of cemeteries. With 17 cemeteries for the interment of human beings and one for pets, the population exceeds the living dead by thousands to one. This has led to the nickname of "the city of the silent" ("the city of the silent") and also led to a slogan funniest among some residents: "It's great to be alive in Colma" ("it's great to be alive in Colma. ") Because of their precarious position along the San Andreas fault , to San Francisco sometimes called "the city waiting to die" ("The City That Waits to Die"), leading to one of the most morbid nicknames Colma: The city expects' the city waiting to die 'to die' ( "The City That Waits 'The City That Waits to Die' to die").

Colma became the location of a large number of cemeteries when San Francisco, the big city neighbor to the north, passed an ordinance in 1900 outlawing the construction of more cemeteries in the city (mainly due to increasing values making the cost of land used for cemeteries prohibitive), then passed another ordinance in 1912 that evicted all existing cemeteries from city limits. (The similar scenario prevails in New York City in Manhattan, where there is only one still active cemetery - the cemetery and crematorium in the Trinity Church at the intersection of the street 150 and Broadway, on the northwestern edge of Harlem). The relocation of cemeteries from San Francisco to Colma is the subject of the rest in second place final: The story of the lost cemeteries of San Francisco, (2005) a documentary by Trina Lopez.
